Exercise Two

On two seperate sheets of parer draw the following pictures:

  1. A ball crashed through a window and rips through a newspaper that a person sitting in a room is reading. Show the persons reaction... (actually not i re-read it, i think i drew the sinario slightly too early..

2.   Someone slips and grabs at a table clothe to try and stop themselves falling whilst a second person tries to catch the vase that is on the table from falling.

Life Drawing 29/10/12

I cant believe how quickly the life drawing classes have gone, i have enjoyed them immensely and i am actually rather sad that they are stopping for now. However, i am looking forward to the acting classes! I do feel like i have improved, especially with my technique, i feel like i am watching the model more and i am starting to draw what i see, rather then what my brain thinks looks right. I am more confident with my line work and i actually feel more confident about my capabilities. Initially i was use sure whether i could capture a persons face free hand, but i now feel that i can draw what ever i like if i put time in and concentrate. I have picked up good habits like holding a pencil at arms length and measuring the model, the angles of the body and the limbs etc. I have also now realized that the human body had subtle curves, that unless you look properly, you can easily miss. For example, the arm, people may think its quite like a cylinder with a join. but if you study the arm, there are dips and curves in the outline, they maybe subtle but they are there.
Overal i really enjoyed the life drawing classes, i found them to be challenging and rewarding, and i can not wait to jump into the next bundle of life drawing classes.

On the second part of the life drawing class we were given a sheet of paper and we had to draw the following:
  1. A person running
  2. A speeding car
  3. A newspaper being blown in the wind
  4. A person slipping on ice
  5. A feather falling.
Initially i was a little concerned, as i didnt think i would be able to portray these things, my falling feather is a bit naff but i am quite pleased with everything else, but after thinking about my drawings, if i was to draw them again i would change the wheels on the car to a slanted oval shape to make it look as if it was going faster, and i would have thought about the framing of the drawings. So for instance, i would put my running man towards the right hand side of the page to make it look like he was running further and faster.

Life Drawing 8/10/12

This week was a lovely change as we got to draw a male model, we completed various tasks similar to the weeks before hand. Firstly starting with quick 5 minute drawings or quick poses, and then doing a half hour study and so on. It is actually really interesting to compare both of the models physique. It is interesting how both of the models are more rounder around their midriff and have longer legs. I must say though, i enjoy drawings the female model over the male model, i think women are more voluptuous and curvaceous then men, they have more 'lumps and bumps' and it makes them for me slightly more interesting to draw.

Study of dancing man. 8/10/12

In our life drawing class we were split into two groups. Group one would go down stairs for the first part of the lesson and concentrate on drawing a famous man dancing, it is rather embarrassing that i cannot remember his name really. Ron put on the movie and he paused on a certain performance so we could see the way the gentleman's body moved, where it twisted, the angles of the feet, shoulders and arms. I started off by drawing some really quick vague lines across the page so i could try and get the same proportions. I actually think the top line of the drawings above is quite successful, from studying at Farnham i feel like i have picked up so much, and before i honestly would not have thought that when people walk they walk with arks like a ball bounces. I actually got the arch for the head on the top row which i'm really happy with. The actor was spinning around and ended up pointing his left hand the air. I actually found it really interesting, when you watch a film sequence, you don't realise all of the angles and constant changes, it really opened up my eyes. Personally i think that i would prefer to animate animals so maybe it would be a good idea to record some natural history television programmes and some wild life documentary's and do the same task we did today in detail. This is something i could do for research when starting any animation!

Pencil figurative drawing.

The drawing about is my favourite drawing of the figurative drawings i did. I think its mainly down to the angle of the model, the way her leg bends around and her feet curves over the arm of the chair. For me it is quite a vulnerable pose, but you could argue that her legs look relaxed by the way they rest on the sofa, however they contrast with her hunched shoulders. So it is a interesting pose for me, and it was hard to get the perspective right and make it look like her shoulders and head were further away then her hip and feet. I wanted to do more life drawing as i was inspired by our life drawing classes. I used 2B, 5B and 6B to create all of the drawings on the page.

Biro Drawings.

These are images of other drawings i have created over the last couple of months. The drawing about is a black Biro drawing of Nicholas Evariste's. This is a cropped down version of the whole piece. Evariste is an extremely fresh young photographer which has stormed into the lime light of fine photography. Evariste is only 27 years old and originates from France. He started photography in 2006. Evariste was quickly attracted by black and white and square format photography.  Landscape holds a strong influence on Evariste's work and also animal photography in both marco and micro forms.
"A dark style for the Normans coasts affected by storms, contrasting with the softness and serenity of wild plants ... a wide variety of series are present in my gallery.  Photography, but not only ... Indeed, I am passionate about everything related to the picture ... Graphic designer by trade, I am also fanatical about painting, cinema, or literature. I like the image in all its forms!" Out of my admiration for this amazing photographer and his incredible photographs i was compelled into drawing one of his pieces in utter detail to justify his work. I really hope that is Nicholas Evariste was ever to see my drawn version he would feel that i had done a good job.

I have a passion for big cats. I love watching documentaries on animals, the way they behave, characteristics, habitat etc. One of my favourite animals are the fabulous and elusive Tiger. Again this is another Biro drawing, as you are probably starting to see, i have a slight obsession with the cheap black ball point pens. If anyone asked me when my favourite medium is to work in, my answer would always be a Biro. It took me a fair while to create this piece. But the satisfaction of finishing it is so worth the hard work. this piece of work is drawn on a A3 piece of cartridge paper, which works really well with Biro. Having a paper with a slightly textures surface means that you can blend out the Biro and masks some of the 'accidental' lines. Having a more smooth paper means that every mark can be seen... However, i believe that every stroke, every line, every mark hand in hand brings something special to a piece of work. I find that the mistakes normally make the piece of work.

Rusty the Horse.

This is one of my original pieces. I was asked to draw a image of a gentleman's horse that i know and to draw him a Biro black and white drawing larger then A3 but smaller then A2. I went to his field field and took photos of his horse horse - Rusty. I love working in Biro and really enjoy working on a larger scale. I have been asked a few times if i use different types of Biro, no, I use WHSmiths own Biro's which i think are brilliant, they have a easy roll which makes them very easy to draw with and they give an excellent line. I am particularly proud of this piece, mainly because i got some great photographs of the horse as well as a final drawing. People may say that the way i work is old fashion, that you need to be slightly more obscure and free with your art to be modern modern (that is what some gallery's have said anyway). Some may agree, some may disagree, but i believe my work to be unique. I take my own quirky photographs from obscure angles and compositions and a draw in a rather unexplored medium.

Personally i love animals, and i love to animate animals to, they move in such interesting ways, and their bodies can create such amazing shapes. I am going to upload my animation from my foundation to my Animation Principles page. So please check it out!

Everyone should try drawing in black biro!!

Life Drawing 01/10/12

Today was our second life drawing class of the year, and overall i enjoyed it much more then i did the first lesson, this is because, for this lesson we were left to our own devises more and told to draw how we like to draw rather then what Ron would like, therefore you could question if i am learning as i am not challenging myself like i did last week. However, we started the class off with three different five minute drawings of quick poses. The first one is always the hardest, you first set your eyes on the model, you need to get a feel for her body shape so it is always much slower then the next couple of drawings. Although the model was the same lady as the previous week so it made it much easier at the beginning of the class to get straight into the drawing.

The image to the left is the first piece i completed. It lacks in line work, tonal range and mostly everything i drawing should include. I do like the proportions though as i felt at the time the proportions were right, and looking back at the drawing now, i still believe it to be so. If i had warmed up quicker i would have liked some time to have added in some more line work to mark all of the twists and curves of the models body. I would have also liked to have added the head, and the facial features. The way i go around drawing is that the head shape should be drawn but only when you have everything else in proportion should you then concentrate on getting the facial features down onto paper, and due to the lack of time i did not have quite enough to get this done. This image is on a A2 piece of paper, so it is fairly large and therefore looks a bit bare with it just being this simple line work. As i said previously it is only a warm up so it isnt going to be at the same standard as my pieces where i get to spend 20-30 minute on.
.
The images to the left are more images of the quick five minute drawings, and in fact even including last weeks lesson i did not get a back pose, so i really enjoyed drawing how the leg bends back and how the back twists in correlation to the arms.

I did not realise that the vertebrae in your back can show though the skin on larger models. The back had dimples all the way down that back which i found really interesting. These images are not anything to be proud of, they are just quick warm up exercises to get me in the mood for a solid two hours of concentration and life drawing!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next task was to complete a twenty minute drawing, how we want the draw, there was not any order, exercise attached to this task, it was simply draw. (which i loved) I was really lucky, being at the front of the class meant that i got a really good front view of the model as well as a good face portrait. I wanted to try and pay attention to what i draw first. I seem to start wit the basic shape of the head. one i have done that i hold a pencil up to the model and work out what would be half way down the page, and what would be at the bottom. Marking the page out at the beginning makes the whole initial drawing so much easier, less rubbish out, less pencil marks and re-drawing lines. I normally start with the shoulders and getting the top angle right, i then measured the distance between the two elbows by holding a pencil up to the model again and also the angle that meet the two elbows together. I did the same for the legs and the knees. I find legs remarkable to draw as many people that do not take much interest in art or drawing would draw legs very straight, rectangular, not much shape, but legs have a vast amount of gentle curves and minor dips, they are not completely straight or flat. The same with the arms, but for me personally i find legs harder to draw, and i also find it harder to get the legs in proportion with the body, i feel like i have done okay with proportion in this drawing. Due to my camera being a bit dodgy it is hard to see that the model is actually sitting on a chair covered in fabric - which would explain the slight 80 degree angle the model is drawn at.
I did not have enough time to shade in all of the drawing, my twenty minute ran out but i wanted to insert a close up image of the drawing, mainly because it is probably the first drawing from the two life drawing lessons that i have taken part in, that i like. I love doing portraits of face silhouettes, i think that you can really get a liking to someone when you draw their facial silhouette. If i had more time i would finish the shading, it was very quick scratchy shading, i wanted to try and get as much down as quickly as i could so i was not very subtle and gentle with my markings. My tutor keeps trying to get it into our heads that we need to draw what our eye see's rather then what our brain think it see's, and i know it is something that takes a while to grasp, but i think i am getting the hang of it, i am much more confident today then i was this time last week, and i think i have come out with better drawings for it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This was the second twenty minute piece we completed in class, i prefer the first drawing more, i feel that it was less successful then the previous drawing, not due to any constructive reason, but just that i prefer the look of the first drawing, maybe because of the models
